IBPS CWE (Clerical) December 2012 Exam Analysis






There is a common admission test conducted by Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). The exam is conducted 2 times a year for Clerks, Probationary Officers (entry level) & Specialist officers' posts. Candidates completing the exam are given a scorecard valid for 1 year. The common exam model covers job vacancies in 19 banks namely Allahabad Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Andhra Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Bank of India, Punjab & Sind Bank, Bank of Maharashtra, Syndicate Bank, Union Bank of India, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, United Bank of India, UCO Bank, Dena Bank, Vijaya Bank, Indian Bank, Corporation Bank, ECGC.


Clerks in Banking Sector are required to deal with in house/intra branch transfer accounts, foreign exchange, and public, maintain the records of the accounts for customers & banks, etc. With the introduction of Information Technology, the traditional working patterns have been replaced by IT networking and these clerks are required to be skilled in computer.


Scheme of Examination

Examination is objective type. The paper is of 200 marks. The Objective exam consists of 5 sections with 50 questions each. The scheme of examination is given as follows:

Quantitative Ability:

  • This section was easy to solve because of the moderate level of the questions. Questions were based on easy concepts. Most of the questions were very straight forward with only simple concepts and their direct application. There were 10 questions from Number Theory, 3-4 questions from Work time & Pipes, 3-4 questions from averages, percentages, profit & loss, 3-4 questions were from Simple & Compound Interest. The section also consisted of 1 question from each topic of Probability, Speed distance time and Permutation Combination. It also consisted of 5 questions from each topic of Logical series, Bar Graph, Line Graph, and Pie Chart.
    Overall attempt in this section should be of 30-32 questions with 90% accuracy.



Verbal Ability:

  • This section was of moderate level. The section was bit lengthy because of Reading Comprehensions. There were 15 questions based on RCs. Although passages were lengthy but questions based on passages were easy and direct. Beside RC there were 15 questions of Fill in the Blanks, 5 questions on Para jumble and phrase replacement each, and 10 questions on spotting the error.
    Overall attempt in this section should be of 40 questions with 75 to 80% accuracy.



Analytical Reasoning:

  • This section was the toughest and time consuming. There were 5 questions from Series, Odd man out, Input-Output, Data Arrangement and Decision making each. Also there were 9 questions from syllogism and statement assumption each. 1 question was on directions and 3 questions on coding-decoding and relations each.
    Overall attempt in this section should be of 30 questions with 80% accuracy.



General Knowledge:

  • This section was of easy to moderate level. The section mainly consisted of questions from banking sector. 10-12 questions were asked from current affairs. Questions on current affairs were based on International organizations, famous awards and prizes, sports, etc.
    Overall attempt in this section should be of 45 questions with 85-90 % accuracy.



Computer Knowledge:

  • This section was of easy to moderate level. The questions were not direct and required good knowledge of computers. The questions were based on networking, Power point, word, excel, hardware, etc.
    Overall attempt in this section should be of 45 questions with 85-90% accuracy.
